Abstract

La lengua mochica forma parte del valioso legado cultural de los pueblos originarios de la costa norte del Perú. Aunque dejó de hablarse como lengua viva hace varias generaciones, su memoria persiste en registros coloniales, en apellidos, en nombres de lugares, en expresiones culturales locales y, sobre todo, en la identidad de muchas personas que se reconocen como descendientes de quienes la hablaron. En los últimos años, ha resurgido un creciente interés por recuperar esta lengua ancestral, no solo como objeto de estudio, sino como una herramienta viva para la enseñanza, el orgullo y la identidad. Este manual forma parte del Proyecto Apeñ Muchik, una iniciativa cultural de proyección socal, que busca acompañar y fortalecer los esfuerzos de recuperación lingüística en la región Lambayeque y más allá, mediante materiales pedagógicos innovadores. Entre estos materiales se encuentra Apeñ muchik – Aprendo mochica (Eloranta & Chávez Tovar, 2025), un libro ilustrado para colorear que introduce vocabulario y gramática básica. También se ha desarrollado el juego de cartas de memoria Apeñ Muchik, una herramienta lúdica compuesta por tarjetas con ilustraciones de animales y sus nombres en mochica.* Todos estos materiales han sido diseñados para facilitar el aprendizaje de la lengua ancestral, vinculado a la identidad cultural del norte del Perú. Este manual está dirigido a docentes de todos los niveles y modalidades que deseen introducir el mochica en su práctica pedagógica. No propone un camino único, sino recursos flexibles que pueden adaptarse según las particularidades de cada grupo, comunidad o entorno educativo. El contenido se organiza en cinco secciones: 1. Introducción general a la lengua mochica, su historia, sus hablantes y su territorio. 2. Presentación del Alfabeto Apeñ Muchik, con ejercicios para familiarizarse con los sonidos de la lengua. 3. Frases básicas de presentación y saludos cotidianos. 4. Expresiones para fechas especiales y momentos de celebración. 5. Una selección comentada de vocabulario mochica, que incluye reflexiones sobre su origen, sus usos y su valor cultural. Que este manual sea una herramienta viva, en movimiento, al servicio de quienes enseñan, aprenden y sueñan con devolverle voz a una lengua que sigue viva en la memoria colectiva y en la voluntad de quienes hoy la hacen renacer.

The Mochica language is part of the valuable cultural legacy of the indigenous peoples of Peru's northern coast. Although it ceased to be spoken as a living language several generations ago, its memory persists in colonial records, surnames, place names, local cultural expressions, and, above all, in the identity of many people who recognize themselves as descendants of those who spoke it. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in recovering this ancestral language, not only as an object of study, but also as a living tool for teaching, pride, and identity. This manual is part of the Apeñ Muchik Project, a cultural initiative with a social outreach that seeks to accompany and strengthen language recovery efforts in the Lambayeque region and beyond through innovative teaching materials. Among these materials is Apeñ Muchik – I Learn Mochica (Eloranta & Chávez Tovar, 2025), an illustrated coloring book that introduces basic vocabulary and grammar. The Apeñ Muchik memory card game has also been developed, a playful tool composed of cards with illustrations of animals and their names in Mochica.* All these materials have been designed to facilitate learning of the ancestral language, linked to the cultural identity of northern Peru. This manual is aimed at teachers of all levels and modalities who wish to introduce Mochica into their teaching practice. It does not propose a single path, but rather flexible resources that can be adapted to the specific needs of each group, community, or educational setting. The content is organized into five sections: 1. General introduction to the Mochica language, its history, its speakers, and its territory. 2. Presentation of the Apeñ Muchik Alphabet, with exercises to familiarize oneself with the sounds of the language. 3. Basic introductory phrases and everyday greetings. 4. Expressions for special dates and moments of celebration. 5. An annotated selection of Mochica vocabulary, including reflections on its origin, uses, and cultural value. May this manual be a living, moving tool, serving those who teach, learn, and dream of giving voice to a language that lives on in the collective memory and in the will of those who revive it today.
