This research aimed to determine the distribution and spatiotemporal variation of the
community of macrozoobenthos from the shallow submarine off Pimentel beach, which was
developed within the framework of the execution of the research project “Impacts of ocean
acidification on the carbonate system and calcification of the violet crab Platyxhantus
orbignyi in the coastal upwelling area off Pimentel, Lambayeque, 2019-2020.” Data on the
abundance, density, diversity, and composition of macrozoobenthic species were analyzed,
as well as the physical-chemical parameters of seawater (salinity, temperature, oxygen, and
pH). The samples were taken with the help of a 0.05 m2 Van Veen dredge in a 5 nm study
transect, from 4.4 to 18 m deep, where 5 sampling stations were established (with 3 replicates
per station). 40 species from 8 phyla were identified, the most abundant being Annelida,
Mollusca, and Arthropoda. The average diversity index was 1.22 bits/ind, with the highest
value at station E3 and in February. Species richness and density increase with depth. The
temporal variation showed an increase in density in the autumn and summer months. The
dissolved oxygen influenced the spatio-temporal variation of the macrobenthic community
(R: 0,228). The water masses in the study area showed the influence of the ACF and the
mixture of this with laps of the ASS and AES.
