atribuyó 0.195 m3/s a infiltración y 30.20 l/s a evaporación.
This study focused on the evaluation of conduction efficiency and the
quantification of flow losses in the Olmos River, specifically in the section between
the La Juliana and Miraflores intakes. The central problem identified was the
unauthorized extraction of water through informal intakes, which negatively impacts
the distribution of water resources. Therefore, the research sought to determine the
exact percentage of flow that is lost on this route. The objectives included measuring
total loss, distinguishing between the factors that cause it (both social and natural)
and proposing strategies to improve water management.
Methodologically, the area-speed method was used with a currentmeter to
carry out gauging at the two intakes: La Juliana and Miraflores. Losses due to
infiltration, evaporation and illegal catchments were analyzed.
The results showed a flow of 8,156 m3/s in La Juliana and 7,771 m3/s in
Miraflores. This represented a net loss of 0.225 m3/s. Of this loss, 0.195 m3/s was
attributed to infiltration and 30.20 l/s to evaporation. It was highlighted that the social
factor (illegal extractions) was the main cause of the decrease in flow, with a total of
seven irregular taps that stole 0.160 m3/s. Although natural factors play a role, the
human component is the most significant in the water deficit.
Finally, the study concludes that the conduction efficiency of the Olmos River
in the section that has been determined for this study is high, reaching 97.24%,
which indicates that the river is hydraulically favorable. However, it is stressed that
informal extractions are the greatest obstacle to fair distribution; therefore, it is
recommended to establish a management and control plan, increase technical
supervision and promote awareness about the responsible use of water that benefit
both the Valle Viejo of Olmos, as well as the Tierras Nuevas.
