y Criollo Local (43750.00 choclos/ha) formaron la mayor cantidad de choclos por hectárea;
The study was conducted in Mochumí, Lambayeque Region, in the lower Chancay Valley, with
the objective of evaluating the performance of four varieties of starchy choclero maize under the
agroecological conditions of the area. The experimental site was geographically located at
6°32′54′′ South latitude and 79°52′08′′ West longitude, at an altitude of 39 meters above sea level.
The experiment was conducted using appropriate agronomic practices and a Randomized
Complete Block Design (RCBD). Four maize varieties were evaluated: Diente de Mula, INIA
603, Criollo Local, and Huachano. Growth and yield characteristics were recorded, and the data
were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Duncan’s multiple range test at a
significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that Huachano and Criollo Local achieved the
highest grain yields, with 6,890.46 and 6,338.82 kg/ha, respectively, whereas INIA 603 recorded
the lowest yield, with 1,603.67 kg/ha. Regarding the number of ears per hectare, Diente de Mula
and Criollo Local presented the highest values, with 45,416.67 and 43,750.00 ears/ha,
respectively, while INIA 603 showed the lowest value, with 22,916.67 ears/ha. The number of
grains per row, number of rows per ear, 1,000-seed weight, and ear weight were important yield
components that contributed to the superior grain performance of the Criollo Local and Huachano
varieties. It is concluded that Huachano and Criollo Local showed the best productive performance
under the conditions of Mochumí and could therefore be considered promising alternatives for
maize production in the lower Chancay Valley, Lambayeque.
