This research explores the factors that generate spaces of resistance among young soldiers of the Voluntary Active Military Service (Servicio Activo Acuartelado, SAA) in the Special Forces Battalion No. 39 of the Peruvian Army. It examines aspects such as the recruitment process, the initial military training stage or “perrada”, daily activities, and the leadership exercised within this unit, while also considering the soldiers’ socioeconomic context, marked by poverty and lack of opportunities. The forms of resistance identified are not always direct or overt; rather, they often manifest symbolically or silently as responses to situations of disagreement, frustration, or tension. These attitudes should not be interpreted as acts of disobedience or rebellion, but rather as adaptive strategies in response to a deficient and unproductive voluntary military system. Based on interviews and documentary analysis, the research reveals that various processes of the Voluntary Active Military Service (SAA)—linked to limited military modernization—lead young volunteers to develop forms of resistance sooner or later. The study suggests that instead of punishing these forms of resistance, they should be recognized as indicators of internal problems and addressed in order to strengthen a more just and effective Army.es_PE
