This research was conducted to determine the effect of adding two doses of essential oils
(EMERALD®) to the diet of rainbow trout on their growth and production. A progressively
increasing stimulus experimental design was used, with one control and two treatments
without replication: Control (feed without added essential oils), Treatment 1 (addition of 0.5
g/kg of feed), and Treatment 2 (addition of 1 g/kg of feed). Six concrete ponds were used:
three for fry rearing, measuring 2.40 m long, 0.70 m wide, and 0.60 m deep, and three for
grow-out, measuring 8.5 m long, 2.20 m wide, and 1.20 m deep. Each pond supported a
population of 1665 trout, with stocking densities varying from 991 fish/m2 for fry to 89
fish/m2 for grow-out. Essential oils were added to the Aquatech brand diet during the fry
stage (first and second month). During the juvenile and adult stages, the fish were fed the
Andean Trout diet. Growth was monitored every two weeks by randomly selecting 50
specimens from each pond, recording total length in mm and total weight in grams. pH and
dissolved oxygen were recorded weekly, while water and ambient temperatures were
measured daily.
The inclusion of essential oils in the diet during the fry stage improved the growth,
production, and survival of O. mykkis, with the best results obtained at a concentration of
0.5 g/kg of feed. This treatment yielded the highest production, best feed conversion ratio,
and greatest feed efficiency. On the other hand, the physicochemical parameters of the water
were similar, falling within the established optimal ranges.
