The study aimed to evaluate the quality of drinking water and analyze its relationship
with the state of the water infrastructure in the Tabacal community, Chontalí district,
Jaén province, during 2025. A mixed-methods approach was used, with a nonexperimental, correlational, and cross-sectional design. Sampling was carried out
at three points (Turure, La Huaca, and Tabacal) during July 2025, and
physicochemical and microbiological parameters were analyzed according to
Supreme Decree No. 031-2010-SA. Checklists and technical inspections were
applied to evaluate the intake, conveyance, storage, and distribution of the water
supply system. The results showed that pH, temperature, and total dissolved solids
were within regulatory limits, while turbidity in La Huaca and Tabacal (≈22.7 NTU)
exceeded the maximum permitted level (5 NTU) by 4.5 times. In the microbiological
component, total coliforms were present at all sampling points, and severe fecal
contamination was found in La Huaca and Tabacal (>200 MPN/100 mL of
thermotolerant coliforms). Furthermore, there was a complete absence of residual
chlorine in the network, rendering the water unsuitable for direct human
consumption. The water infrastructure presented an overall condition index of 33%,
indicating critical deterioration and a lack of preventive maintenance. A strong and
statistically significant negative correlation was confirmed between the deterioration
of the infrastructure and water quality, with specific causal mechanisms identified
(cracks, leaks, lack of disinfection). Therefore, urgent rehabilitation interventions
and continuous chlorination are recommended.
