| es_PE |
| dc.description.abstract | Pedestrian detection systems based on the visible spectrum lose reliability under poor lighting, backlight or adverse weather. This study evaluates YOLOv8n as a pedestrian detector in RGB and thermal modalities on three public datasets with different illumination profiles (LLVIP nighttime, KAIST mixed day/night and FLIR urban driving), and assesses the feasibility of its deployment on three low-power embedded platforms: Jetson Orin Nano 8 GB, Jetson Orin NX 16 GB and Raspberry Pi 5 with Hailo-8L accelerator. Six models (two modalities by three datasets) were trained for 150 epochs with early stopping, and inference was evaluated in FP32, FP16 and INT8 formats through a factorial design yielding 1 470 measurements. Results show that five of six combinations exceed the mAP50 ≥ 0.70 threshold; the exception is RGB on FLIR (0.294). The thermal advantage varies by dataset: marginal on KAIST (+0.1), moderate on LLVIP (+7.0) and large on FLIR (+55.9 points). All three platforms meet the real-time requirement (≥ 30 FPS); the Raspberry Pi 5 + Hailo-8L leads in speed (106–114 FPS INT8) and energy efficiency (13.2–14.3 FPS/W). INT8 quantization introduces a 2.3–2.6% mAP50 degradation. The discussion contrasts these findings with recent literature and qualifies the multispectral hypothesis: thermal information adds value when the visible channel is compromised but does not provide a uniform advantage across scenarios. The study concludes that the YOLOv8n-Thermal configuration on Raspberry Pi 5 + Hailo-8L INT8 best balances precision, speed and energy efficiency for deployments with lighting and power constraints. | es_PE |
