fulfillment of the degree of Second Specialty in Ophthalmology. The study seeks to measure how
much patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) know about their condition and which
factors are associated with that knowledge. Estimated duration: 10 months.
Its objectives are: To determine the level of knowledge about POAG among patients treated at the
Ophthalmology Service of the Lambayeque Regional Hospital; to identify patients'
sociodemographic factors; and to determine the clinical factors associated with the level of
knowledge (diabetes mellitus and family history of glaucoma).
Carrying out this project required the following:
• Population and sample: 1,282 patients with POAG treated in 2025; a sample of 296
patients, obtained through simple random sampling with a 95% confidence level and a 5%
margin of error.
• Inclusion criteria: adults of both sexes diagnosed with POAG and treated between January
and June 2026.
• Exclusion criteria: psychiatric disorders or intellectual disability, inability to be contacted by
telephone, and refusal to participate.
• Instruments: a data collection form and the Munayco et al. questionnaire (14 items, 3
domains, score ranging from 0 to 100): low (0–55), moderate (56–69), and high (70–100).
Ethics: the project adheres to the principles of the Belmont Report, with approval from the ethics
committee, authorization from the hospital, and informed consent.
It is being carried out with a budget of S/ 3,000, financed entirely by the researcher.
Problem:
Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide, and it is projected to affect
111.8 million people by 2040. POAG is asymptomatic in its early stages, so patients typically seek
care only after visual loss has already occurred. Previous studies have shown low or moderate
levels of knowledge across different populations. Research question: What is the level of
knowledge about POAG among patients treated at the Lambayeque Regional Hospital?
Hypothesis: the level of knowledge is low.
Analysis (Procedure)
• Dependent variable: level of knowledge about POAG.
• Independent variables: demographic (sex, age, place of origin), socioeconomic (marital
status, educational attainment, occupation), and clinical (prior ocular surgery, diabetes,
family history).
• Statistics: absolute and relative frequencies, measures of central tendency and dispersion,
and the Chi-square test (5% significance level), using Excel and SPSS v25.
In conclusion, the project is both relevant and feasible. It is well supported by national and
international literature, employs an instrument validated in the Peruvian population, and has a
correctly calculated sample size. Its findings will help identify educational gaps and guide
promotion, prevention, and treatment-adherence strategies aimed at reducing the risk of blindness
due to POAG.
