software ArcGIS 10.8, HEC-HMS, HidroEsta 2, Hydrognomon 4, Excel Office 16 y
A hydrological study of the Chipillico River basin was conducted in response to the
problems that arise annually in the Riecito sector, where peak flows and the risk of
flooding directly affect the Chipillico canal and surrounding areas. The main objective
was to perform a hydrological analysis of peak flows in the Chipillico River for different
return periods and to propose measures to mitigate damage. To this end, an applied
methodology with a descriptive-explanatory level was used. Data were collected
through document review, direct observation, and interviews with residents. The
software used for processing was ArcGIS 10.8, HEC-HMS, HidroEsta 2, Hydrognomon
4, Excel Office 16, and Google Earth Pro, which allowed for the characterization of the
basin, analysis of precipitation history, and estimation of peak flows. The results
indicated that the basin is elongated, with a Kc value of 2.23, an Ff value of 0.07, and
a drainage density of 0.21 km/km2. The slope was 13.40%, while the maximum flow
rate was 3472.2 m3/s for a 100-year return period (TR), a very high figure that exceeds
the historical record of 496.40 m3/s (2023) calculated at the Chipillico intake;
demonstrating the magnitude of extreme events in the basin. Mitigation measures were
proposed for critical points in the canal. It is concluded that the basin has extreme
hydrological conditions that exceed historical records, making it essential to consider
these values in design and planning. Furthermore, the analysis should be
complemented with specialized technical studies to properly manage the risk.
