The objective of this research was to determine the seroprevalence of IgG antibodies
against Toxoplasma gondii and identify associated risk factors in domestic cats (Felis
catus) in the Chiclayo district of Peru. A cross-sectional study was conducted, sampling
100 cats older than 3 months, after obtaining informed consent from their owners. Serum
samples were analyzed using the IgG ELISA test for antibody detection. Concurrently, a
16-question questionnaire was administered to assess risk factors related to the
environment, health, and dietary habits. The overall seroprevalence of T. gondii was 11%.
The odds ratio (OR) analysis showed that the risk factors significantly associated with
seropositivity (p<0.05) were: access to the street (OR=8.16), sharing food and water
bowls with other cats (OR=8.54), consumption of homemade food (OR=7.28), and,
notably, the consumption of raw or undercooked meat (OR=20.16). It is concluded that
management practices and, especially, diet, are key determinants of the risk of T. gondii
infection in the studied feline population.
