In recent decades, earthquake-resistant structural engineering has seen innovations in
construction techniques aimed at improving the structural performance of buildings during
earthquakes, thus ensuring the safety and well-being of people. It has been observed that after
an earthquake, some conventional buildings sustain damage with repair costs exceeding initial
estimates. Approximately 18 million people live in areas with high seismic risk in Peru.
The objective of this research is to carry out the technical-economic comparative analysis
of an 8-story building with and without viscous fluid dampers in the Pimentel District – Chiclayo.
The project site area is 290.52m2. The building is analyzed and designed conventionally,
featuring a structural wall system. As a second alternative, the building is analyzed and designed
with Viscous Fluid Dampers (VFD). Time-history analysis with 7 pairs of seismic records was the
method used to analyze the structure with VFD linearly and non-linearly.
The conventionally designed building exhibited drifts of 0.065 in X and 0.056 in Y, while
the building with a DFV (Dynamic Dissipation Factor) achieved drifts of 0.059 in X and 0.0055 in
Y, both complying with standard E.030. The building with a seismic protection system showed
better structural performance, as 60% of the total incoming energy of an earthquake is dissipated
by the energy dissipators, whereas in the conventional building, 100% of the energy from the
earthquake is absorbed by the structural elements. In terms of cost, the impact of the building
with dissipators on the conventional building is 14%, a percentage lower than the 15-20% cost of
repairing buildings after an earthquake.
