| es_PE |
| dc.description.abstract | The study was conducted from June 25 to December 2024 with the aim of diagnosing guinea pig production in the province of Lambayeque in 2024. The sample size was calculated with a 96% confidence level, a 0.5% probability of success and failure, and a 3.68% margin of error. Through purposive and convenience sampling, 769 producers distributed across all districts were interviewed. The activity is predominantly carried out by women (69.12%) and grew after the pandemic, especially in family-commercial production systems (42.27%), generating self-employment (79.55%). A total of 88.74% of producers do not keep production records; crossbreeding with the Peru breed predominates (56.37%), continuous breeding is used (100%), and type I hair phenotype is the most common (89.19%). Most producers raise guinea pigs in cages (71.63%) under rustic conditions. Regarding feeding, 61.42% do not provide water. Producers rely on purchased forage (54.63%) and homegrown forage (45.37%), with limited technical assistance (93.49%) and low use of concentrate feed (15.75%). Nearly half reported health problems and higher mortality due to abortions during hot weather. Sales to middlemen account for 56.61% of producers; marketing is mostly individual, involving live guinea pigs weighing 500 to 1000 g, with prices ranging from S/15 to over S/25. There is little participation in specialized markets, since only 27.00% sell guinea pigs for “cleansing” rituals and 67.77% do not take advantage of the market for young guinea pigs used in restorative soup. | es_PE |
